When we first began researching how sunscreen protects the skin, we did not expect the project to grow into something much bigger. What started as a simple personal investigation soon became an opportunity to address an environmental challenge. Our project, SunSafe Development of an Eco-Friendly Mineral Sunscreen, was created to explore safer ways of protecting our skin while also protecting the environment. I was honored that the project was recognized during Innovation Day, and the journey behind it has been both exciting and educational.

The problem that inspired this project was the environmental impact of many conventional sunscreens. Research shows that common chemical ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate can wash into oceans and water bodies when people swim or shower. These chemicals contribute to coral bleaching and harm marine ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and the health of our oceans. While sunscreen is important for protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation, it was important to explore whether there could be a safer alternative.

To address this issue, we developed a mineral-based sunscreen formulation using zinc oxide as the main UV filter. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb ultraviolet radiation and release heat, zinc oxide works by reflecting and scattering UV rays, providing protection without releasing harmful chemicals into water systems. What makes this project innovative is its focus on balancing human health and environmental sustainability.

Like many projects, this journey was not without challenges. Formulating the sunscreen required careful research, testing, and adjustments to ensure the mixture was stable and effective. Through this process, I learned valuable skills such as problem-solving, research, and perseverance, as well as the importance of patience in scientific experimentation.

We hope this project encourages more research into eco-friendly personal care products that protect both people and the planet. Participating in Innovation Day has shown me that even a small idea can grow into a meaningful solution. We are grateful for the support of my teachers and school community, and We hope this project inspires other students to use their knowledge and creativity to develop innovations that can positively transform lives.
