The girls’ hockey team, Scarlets, were recently crowned Kiambu County Hockey Champions during the championship games held between March 4th to 6th.

The highlight of the tournament came in the final match against Loreto Limuru, where the team secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory. When the final whistle blew, it was a moment of excitement and pride for the players, knowing that their determination and teamwork had paid off and brought honour to the school.

The journey began at the Zonal Championships held at Thika High School from 19th to 21st February. The team displayed great discipline and teamwork throughout, eventually emerging as zonal champions and proceeding to represent the zone at the county games.

At the Kiambu County games, the team continued their impressive form, defeating Maryhill Girls High School 3 – 0, St. Anne’s 7 – 0 and Loreto Kiambu 5 – 0. These results secured their place in the semi-finals, where they delivered one of their most dominant performances with an 8 – 0 victory over Mary Leakey Girls’ School, advancing to the county finals.

The final against Loreto Limuru proved more competitive and demanded focus and resilience from the entire team. Through determination, teamwork and disciplined play, the Scarlets secured the decisive goal in the second half, sealing the victory that crowned them Kiambu County Champions.

Reflecting on the experience, team captain Perez Jovilet Oyalo described the journey as both challenging and inspiring.

“Leadership during the tournament meant more than just leading on the pitch. It involved encouraging teammates during tough moments, keeping the team focused, and reminding us of what we were capable of achieving together.”

She added that the unity within the team played a key role in their success.

“Every player played her role, supported her teammates, and gave her best for the team. It was this spirit of togetherness that helped us overcome challenges and stay strong throughout the competition.”

The team also expressed gratitude to Coach Sakin and Coach Barnabus for their guidance, dedication, and belief, as well as to various teachers, clinicians, the school leadership, and the entire community for their continued support and encouragement.

Winning the county championship marks a significant achievement for the Scarlets, who will now represent the school at the Regional Championships. As preparations begin, the team remains committed to training harder and continuing to represent the school with determination and pride.

They also hope that this achievement will inspire younger players to pursue and develop their passion for hockey.
