The DP1 Experience – “Hands That Clean, Hearts That Care”

When we first learned that Mazingira Day was a national public holiday, we couldn’t help but smile. It felt amazing to know that an entire day was dedicated to something as important as protecting our environment. It made us proud that our country values nature enough to set aside a day for it, and even more excited that we, as students, could contribute in our own way.

Our DP 1 group took part in collecting litter around the school compound and farm areas. It might sound simple, but the experience was far more meaningful than we expected. Each handful of litter collected felt like a small victory for the planet. As we worked, we saw how much cleaner and fresher our surroundings became, and that made every bit of effort worth it.

The moment that stood out most came when one of our classmates accidentally dropped a full trash bag, scattering litter everywhere. Instead of getting annoyed, everyone burst out laughing and immediately rushed to help pick it up again. That shared laughter reminded us that teamwork isn’t about being perfect; it’s about supporting one another and keeping our spirits high, even when things don’t go as planned.

Working under the hot sun was definitely challenging. At one point, everyone was sweaty and tired, but we found creative ways to stay motivated. Someone played music, others cracked jokes, and before we knew it, the whole mood had shifted. The laughter made the work feel lighter, and by the end, we were proud to see what we’d accomplished together.

From this experience, we learned that protecting the environment doesn’t always require huge actions; it begins with small steps, like keeping shared spaces clean. We also discovered that sustainability is a community effort. When one person grows tired, another steps in; when someone finds a better method, everyone follows.

If we could add something to next year’s celebration, we’d include a tree-planting session or short sustainability talk, something that leaves a lasting impact beyond just the day itself.

For us, Mazingira Day was a reminder that service can be fun, teamwork can be powerful, and that our small actions, when done together, truly make a big difference.

The MYP Experience – “Soapy Smiles and Sunny Vibes”

When I first heard that Mazingira Day was a national public holiday, I was excited and proud. It felt special to have a day set aside just to care for the environment, to clean, plant, and celebrate nature with joy.

Our MYP year group was assigned to clean Tsavo Residence, a space that hadn’t been used in a while. We swept every corner, sorted through old laundry, and watered the plants around the building. It was a lot of work, but we had fun doing it together. By the time we finished, the place looked transformed entirely, fresh, clean, and alive again.

The most unforgettable part came afterwards. Once we were done cleaning, someone splashed a little water, and before long, it turned into a full-blown water fight! Everyone was laughing, running around, and enjoying the freedom of the moment. It was pure joy, like being a kid again.

We did face some challenges: the place was dusty, and a few cleaning tools were old and hard to use. But teamwork made all the difference. We shared tools, encouraged each other, and found ways to make it fun despite the hard work.

Through the day’s activities, we learned that environmental care starts small, with daily habits like cleaning up, planting trees, and reducing waste. Sustainability isn’t just about big projects; it’s about simple actions done consistently. Working side by side with classmates made it even more meaningful, showing us how much we can achieve when we work together.

If we could add something to next year’s Mazingira Day, it would be a tree-planting and recycling competition to make things even more exciting and educational. Watching the trees we plant grow over time would be a perfect reminder of our impact.

In the end, Mazingira Day turned into a mix of mops, laughter, and wild water battles, the best kind of chaos! It showed us that caring for the environment can be joyful, and that the best change happens when we all join in with soapy smiles and sunny vibes.
