My name is Jilna, I study at the Illinois State University in Illinois, USA. I’m studying BS Journalism as my major course but currently undertaking the Undergraduate Pathway Program which has ten general education courses. This semester I am taking five and will complete the remaining five next semester.
My interest in journalism has always been like a secret because my mother wanted me to study a different course, for that reason, I never participated in anything that involved journalism because as a ‘good’ child, disappointing my mother was the last thing I wanted to do. I then thought about my decision once again and figured out that I am doing this for my future self, I wouldn’t want to wake up in the morning for work and feel disgruntled with the fact that I am going to do something that I had no interest in. I thank God that my family still supports me even after expressing my feelings towards the course they wanted me to study.
I want to be successful in my career and work with some of the most successful companies in Kenya and other parts of the world. Studying at Illinois is like a blessing, the staff are friendly and understanding, more so when I was using my phone for all my classes, meetings, and assignments. It was hard, but I never missed a class. I am grateful that I now have a Mac Book and an iPad. I am turning in my assignments before they are due, getting good grades, and enjoying my zoom classes without the fear of a battery exploding on my face because of charging and having a class at the same time.
